Both are extremely powerful women who, under different circumstances, could have very easily been squaring off in a boxing ring or as political opponents. Gemma and Tara get to have yet another wonderful exchange that reveals so much about who these two women really are. Now the question is will Tara commit suicide, and if she does will that ‘weight’ on Jax destroy him? Also, how perfect was it that Jax leaves one women behind who has been physically battered, Colette, and then leaves another one behind who has been psychologically damaged beyond repair? Tara’s Ophelia-like descent into madness seems to be just about complete as after confronting Jax in the brothel she completely loses it and realizes before driving off that she had basically lost her mind. More intrigue is added to Tara as she desperately confronts Wendy about being the weak link in her plan and the two share a painful exchange in which Tara realizes that the core difference between she and Wendy is that Tara is wiling to sacrifice her life in order to save her children, and Wendy never could. Mayhem now affects pretty much every player in Tara’s life and when she breaks down and cries in her office where she faked her miscarriage perhaps Tara realizes that her sons are next on the list, no matter what she does. Poor Margaret Murphy, who has been Tara’s only real ally when you think about it, is now in legitimate fear for her life, as is her lawyer Ally Lowen. That's just my opinion, and though it's shared by a majority of people, there is no right or wrong when it comes to subjectivity and opinions. We also have a very poignant scene this week in which Tara realizes just how much she is now endangering the lives of the people around her. They had that something extra that sets them apart.īut, as I've said a few times, it all comes down to preference. They're amazing television, to be sure, but the others really just kind of elevated the standards of the medium, did things no other shows had done, etc. Then on the next level down you'd have shows like Sons of Anarchy, The Shield, Justified. But if you were to look at a chart that showed tiers of all-time great TV, I feel like at the top tier you'd see The Wire, The Sopranos, True Detective, Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men, Breaking Bad. Sons of Anarchy is a good show, I am absolutely a huge, huge fan of it.

They are both so close to perfect that they're almost interchangeable when trying to pick the #1. When looking at individual seasons of shows, I firmly believe that True Detective season 1 and The Wire season 4 are the two most perfect seasons of television ever produced. And at that point, it just comes down to preference (as all shows do). That, to me, is the absolute highest achievement of television. The only show I consider to be better than The Sopranos (when looking at series' as a whole) is The Wire. It's all subjective, but I will absolutely say that yes, it really is that good. It still is, but there have since been other shows that too fit that, namely Breaking Bad.Īs the previous comment said, there isn't a moment of screen time that isn't crucial, be it to the characters or the overall story. It was the gold standard for a long time, that one show that everyone said "it's not as good as The Sopranos, but it's really good!".

It redefined what one could expect from TV in terms of acting, production value, and just overall storytelling. The Sopranos ushered in the current golden age of television.
